CMMXYZ Shows off Industry-leading Metrology Services at CMTS 2019
CMMXYZ Sales, Programming and Support Staff at CMTS 2019
Earlier this month, CMMXYZ had their top talent and equipment on display at the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS) in Mississauga, Ontario. Our goal for this show was to demonstrate the latest in 3D scanning equipment and to promote our industry-leading metrology services.
CMMXYZ has long been known in the industry as a company that sells Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), but we are much more than that! Our talented staff of professionals cover a wide range of skill sets and offer such services as reverse engineering, contract programming, CMM maintenance/repair/calibration, and training/support on all the software & equipment we sell.
Meet the Afrovenator – a replica dinosaur skull ready to be digitally preserved using the Artec Leo 3D handheld scanner
With all the 21st technology on display at our booth, the question we got asked most was: "What's with the dinosaur bones?" Those bones, as it turns out, belong to a 170-million-year-old beast named "Afrovenator." This replica casting is a perfect example of the type of object we can quickly and easily scan to capture digital information using the Artec Leo.
One of the most interesting applications of 3D scanning these days is the on-going effort to preserve ancient artifacts digitally. "Preserved for posterity," as the saying goes.
Demonstrating the 3D scanning capabilities of the Artec Leo
Our role in this important preservation process comes in the form of the Artec Leo - the fastest professional handheld 3D scanner on the market. The Artec Leo provides the most intuitive workflow, making 3D scanning as easy as taking a video.
The Artec Leo can capture colour data that is later reproduced in colour 3D printing.
Capturing scan data on these precious bones provides us with accurate digital representations that will be safely stored for generations. We can then reproduce them exactly for research, education and display purposes. We had the dinosaur bones at our booth specifically to show that we could scan anything from mechanical metal pieces to organic shapes.

Using the Artec products, we can also capture their colour and make texture maps (colour information) for digital models to be used later in colour 3D printing. They can then make museum-quality representations with a mix of 3D printing, casts and CNC cut foam that is then covered and painted for everyone to enjoy.
